In which this has been a week:

~ I rode my bike to work on New Year's Day, as there were no buses. I did not ride it all the way, and I could not ride it home (because gentle yet deceptive gradient, boo). So I had to walk with it almost all the way. Also it was raining.

~ I injured my right ring fingertip on some metalwork while cleaning on Friday evening, and it obviously hasn't healed properly yet because it's on a fingertip of my dominant hand, so I keep catching it on stuff and setting it off bleeding again. Fun times!

~ And then! It snowed on Saturday night. Which, again, meant no buses because although the main roads were clear, because of the diversions, nothing could get into town (or drivers, probably, depending on where they live).

I checked to see if I had messages from anyone else about whether they were going in. I did not. So foolishly, I set off walking. In three inches of snow. For three miles. While it was still snowing.

Anyway, tl;dr version: nobody else in my dept had come in, so it was open, but it was extremely bare bones because there was only me.

And then I had to walk home because there were still no buses, and I didn't know if taxis were running, and I couldn't be arsed to find out. Also it was raining. But I was going home, so I didn't mind so much.

It was so weird, though, because there were so few people/not a lot of traffic around, it felt like being in some strange, post-apocalyptic environment. Like, there were signs there'd been life here, but there wasn't much evidence of it. (Work was, well, work. Just with less people than usual - both coworkers and customers).

I'm glad I've got today and tomorrow off, though, because although I don't feel as shit as I was expecting to, I don't feel great, so at least I can just bimble around the house and not do too much.

#

In other news:

~ I rewatched all of Oxventure Wyrdwood, and now I want to rewatch it again, heh. It's given me a mighty craving for all things folk horror-y (I mean, it had already but now it's really intense). I am currently watching Golden Rodent play Balatro, however.

~ Me and Sarah hung out for a bit last week and got spooked by a goat just staring at us (I mean, of all the farm animals it could have been, and while I was telling her about Wyrdwood as well!)

~ I bought an air fryer instead of a new microwave. I figured I didn't use the micro that much, whereas I use my oven/stove more, and would like to cut down on my (frankly ludicrous) gas bill.

I have next to no idea what I can do with it (yet), but I am looking forward to maybe getting back into baking again, and also perhaps making slightly more complex dishes than I do currently.

~ I bought and started playing Persona 5 Tactica. I am about three hours in and have few thoughts beyond "art style is cool", "I like Erina (and her costume design)" and "Toshiro needs a good slap upside the head because he is, in part, a predictable Japanese male character".

#

I think that is everything for now. I can't be arsed doing a post summing up 2024. It was pretty shit for the most part. I'm glad to see the back of it. Hopefully 2025 might be better, but honestly who knows.
Keanu Reeves is going to be sixty tomorrow, and I am fully unprepared for this!

~

My hands are really painful at the moment, and I wonder if it is a stress response.

I have worked A LOT over the last two weeks, with just two days off in the middle (and not together). I also have not been sleeping well. Anyway, tl:dr version: I ended up accidentally burning myself out on Friday by doing more than I thought I was capable of as well as a 6.5 hour shift at work.

I noticed that my hands started hurting partway through the shift. It got to the point where I couldn't get into a bottle of tomato sauce and had ask someone else to do it for me, because I couldn't grip tightly enough. And, as I say, my hands are still hurting and feel very stiff, two days later.

But I'm totally capable of doing a full time job, am I? [/sarcasm] (sorry, I am still very bitter about this).

Anyway, I've got a few days off, one tiny shift tomorrow, and then next week I am on holiday for a week! \o/ So hopefully I can recover well.

~

In other, more exciting, news, my new headphones are here, and they are delightful!

Why I didn't just buy these in the first place, I have no idea, but at least I have them now, and they are providing an excellent aural experience!

I did manage to get a refund on the old ones, which was nice, so that covers some of the cost of these. And I ended up getting a partial refund from some clothes I bought (one of the items was out of stock), so that will cover a little bit more, so I can feel a bit less guilty about how much I spent on these ones.

(Who am I kidding, I will never stop feeling guilty).

It was my nephew's tenth birthday the other day, and honestly w t f where have those last ten years gone?

~

Anyway, the rest of this entry is going to be about music!

First of all, so as I am sure y'all are aware, Youtube does this thing where after a set amount of time, it will tell you that you have not watched videos you have watched. I'm sure it has something to do with data protection, but it gets frustrating when I know I've seen something, but I don't particularly want to watch it again.

However, it told me I hadn't seen either of Outside Xtra's list videos about times video game music blew their minds. I have. The first one was posted mere days after my birthday in 2019, so it felt like a weird birthday present at the time, even though it absolutely wasn't. So I decided to watch them again.

Now. I don't know if you know this, but I absolutely love music. If you do, apologies for repeating myself.

So while I was watching these two lists, I compiled a list of my own of stuff I liked that I wanted to listen to RIGHT THEN.

And then. Well, then, my friends, I somehow, four hours later, ended up with a list of my own of stuff I liked from video games I liked/had played/etc. It is a very long list. There are fifty, if not sixty plus tracks on there. I decided that I would like to share it with y'all. I just need to type it up.

I'm going to post it as a free to all post on ko-fi. There will be no links to anything, so you'll have to go and look up the tracks yourselves (although chances are for at least some of them, you will probably already be familiar with). But I love music and I wanted to share!

(Also: not gonna lie about thinking about future lists - this one is Random Shit I Like, but future ones might be Chill Stuff or Creepy Stuff, or whatever else I can think of. And also not necessarily game music).

And then the other thing is that two years ago (approximately), I bought myself a new stereo. It has a USB input, to which you can slot in a memory stick full of music, and it will play it. (It will also play MP3 CDs, but I must admit I haven't actually tried that out yet. I should!)

And I had a 16Gb memory stick lying around that I had bought to save screencaps from my PS4 on. Except it never got used. So I filled it full of music, and sometimes I plug it into the stereo, and I listen to music and I am happy.

(I'm also still trying to get back into the groove of being able to use a stereo again, which I know sounds daft, but it is a thing).

And then yesterday, when I was loading some more music onto it, I realised that hey, if I can plug it into the stereo and listen to stuff, I can also plug it into the laptop and listen to stuff! GENIUS! And thus, that is what I did this morning, and it has been glorious. Although I am after an alternative music program than Windows Music Player (as always). I downloaded one called Musicbee, which I've never heard of, but thought I would give a go!

~

In news I thought I would never say: because it's ~a year since I played FFXV, I am feeling weirdly nostalgic about it, and I don't know why!

(Last night I watched a Eurogamer video where Ian and Aoife were playing the FFXV VR fishing game (?!) that came out in 2017, and at one point where Ian mentions something about plot in this game, Aoife says, "well, there wasn't much in the main game," and it kind of pleased me that she acknowledged that. I mean, IDK how she feels about the entire game these days, but basically I'm glad I'm not the only one irritated by this).

# I bought babby's first ever pair of wireless earphones this Saturday just gone.

Youtube decided to randomly rec me some bloke I'd never heard of, reviewing Poundland's* current tech range. Which included said in-ear bluetooth earphones. He was so positive about them, I decided to go out and get a pair. So I did.

And honestly, he's right. They're WAY better quality sounding than they have any right to be (they're not perfect, though. There's too much bass, and I'm someone who likes the bass to be apparent in things). The bluetooth connection is a bit choppy, however, if you, like me, like to wander away from the device you're using. Which is the reason I bought them, but I guess if I mostly stay in the same room, I'll be okay.

I've currently mostly used them for listening to music on my commute and it's been a delight.

# I also bought some pens for EXTREMELY CHEAP as my local Clinton's seem to be doing away with their stationery range, and thus all the pens are 20p each. Which basically meant I got three Pilot pens and two Stabilo ones for an entire quid, and I am very happy :D

# I saw a white deer, and it was bloody amazing! I've never seen a white one before, so it was really cool! I am not going to say where or when, because it feels special, and also I remember what happened to that one that innocently went wandering about in Liverpool a few months back.

# [personal profile] hmpf bought some more mugs from my Redbubble shop, as I have updated it a couple of times recently and I had some designs in that she liked!

EDIT: I'm not going to mention every time someone buys something from me, but right now it just seemed like a convenient way of reminding me that I updated, and I meant to tell y'all. [/edit]

Also a reminder that anything that's available there is available as a print directly from me, and likely for cheaper (although only in A6/A5 format at the moment), if you fancy buying one!

# And that's all I've got for now!

~

*It's called Poundland because everything used to cost £1 (one pound). Anyway, now most things cost £1, some things are slightly cheaper, some are more expensive. Apparently it's roughly equivalent to Dollar Tree?

I had to take Jazz to the vet for her six month check up yesterday, so obviously I am The Worst.

She is absolutely fine, for the most part, and was very well behaved, even when she had her claws clipped! Which is something none of the vets have attempted before, I don't think, and she won't even let me do it (I have tried holding her feet very gently and putting a claw out (but not clipping) and sometimes she'll let me do this and other times she knifes me, and that's fair).

The only thing that is a bit of a problem is that she has gained some more weight. In spite of me giving her less food since last time when I was told she needed to lose some weight! Both me and the vet think it's likely down to her dry food, so I have to switch that out for a healthier one. Which I can do, but it wil irk me because I just bought brand new dry food last week.

After we got back, I thought Jazz would run off and hide, but she actually spent a couple of hours hanging out with me in the living room. I mostly ignored her, and just gave her little fusses here and there, and when she went off upstairs, I left her to it. And now we are friends again, so yay!

~

So, since getting this new computer, I have actually got excited about doing stuff on it again. Like, I was thinking how I could do digital art (nothing fancy, just messing around in Paint to start with), and I got really hyped up thinking about it.

I haven't done any digital art in nearly four years (summer 2018 was the last time I tried, iirc). Partly because I never got that into it, and partly because it's just not something I've thought about doing much recently*. But the other night, I was sitting in bed with the new laptop, having played X amount of games of Solitaire, and I thought, I have enough room to sit here with my tablet and do art if I want to! (My downstairs set up is not conducive to this, even sitting at a desk). But then I was like, "My graphics tab, though it be a Wacom, is circa ten years old! Will Windows even recognise it???"

And the answer is yes, Windows does, although it runs it on a generic driver, so it's good job I don't want to do anything fancy.

Then I realised I can also do other stuff as well. Like write (hahaha**). Or talk to my friends, because you bet I downloaded the Discord app, even though I am chronically bad at remembering to sign into it! or talking to people on it! But I've always kind of been like that with IMs. (I'm open to recs for other IM programs, though. Discord kind of scares me a bit because there's just SO MUCH of it, and I still don't know what to do with my server, lol).

I could also, if I wanted to, hook the laptop up to the TV via the HMDI cable. I don't want to, but I totally could.

But it feels nice to be excited about art stuff! I know I've said this a lot over the past few years, but it feels like little bits of me are slowly returning. I don't know where they went, but I'm glad they're coming back. Especially when you consider that I almost stopped doing art altogether. I'm immensely glad that I didn't.

~

ETA: Please enjoy this small video of this extremely smug Pallas' Cat! And also this cat dressed as lion for Lunar New Year![/eta]

~

*Except when I look at stuff by the amazing pixel artists I'm following on twitter, and then I'm like, "DANG".

**My want to write fiction has been slowly declining since ~2013 and I'm at the point now where IDK if I'll ever really pick it back up again.
It's currently very windy outside, and Do Not Want. I guess at least it's not raining as well, but ugh.

~

Anyway, in other news, I bought a new computer and external HD (4Tb)! I've been meaning to for some time, and I could afford a cheap one, so that's what I did!

I got a Dell Inspiron, which is a make I've had before (my first ever computer was Dell, so I know they're good/reliable). It's not the best Dell ever, but it will suffice for how/what I want to use it for.

It came with Windows 11, and I'm surprised to report that, at the moment, I don't hate it! It reminds me more of classic Windows than whatever the nonsense that was 8 did (screensavers are available, and that just threw me right back to 2002, y'all. Honestly surprised the maze and pipes ones aren't in there).

I have downloaded most of the things I think I will need thus far (I don't use my computer very much these days, except to do a bit of internet/image edit). I am about to download the Steam app, because eventually I want to buy Dorfromantik and probably Loop Hero (thanks, Johnny Chiodini!) and I am aware this is a terrible and dangerous thing and also they have a Lunar New Sale on right now oh my frogs.

But anyway, my question is this! What other things (not games) are good to download? I have a video editor/image editor/Libre Office/Firefox/Discord/VLC. What are your recs for antivirus programs? What are good add-ons for Firefox? I have an ad blocker and spell checker, and IDK what else I might need, since it's some time since I've done a fresh install like this (I haven't used Windows in EIGHT YEARS OMG. It will be so nice to see what I'm scanning as I'm scanning it, though).

I don't regret using Linux, but there were definitely a bunch of things I couldn't/didn't do because the means weren't available to me, or were too complicated for me to get my head around. It's great for some things, but not so much for others (imo). I am kind of sorry to see it go, but also I'd like to be able to know what I'm doing if someone asks me for help with their computer, heh.

~

Thanks to that bullet journalling video I linked the other day, I got out my Stabilo highlighters, and colour coded the days in my planner and...it's like a magic trick. Suddenly, everything stands out where it had all kind of blurred together before.

But because I only had six highlighters, and there are seven days in a week, I decided I needed more, so I went and bought six more, oops? Although now I have 12/14 of the current pastel range so yay? And I'll use them for other things besides highlighting, as that's the thing I use them for the least.

I also rearranged how the journal's laid out, as my current way wasn't cutting it, and it's nice to have a space to write any notes if I need to at the bottom right. Not that I write notes all that often, but it's nice to have the option?

I also sorted out all my stickers, in the hopes I will use them more. A lot of the videos about journalling/collaging I've been watching use stickers quite a lot, and ofc I want some of them (wouldn't be addicted to stationery if I didn't!), but I thought I should use up some of the ones I have. I thought it would be an absolute mission since there's a lot of stickers, but it only took around an hour to sort everything out into broad categories, so that wasn't so bad at all.

~

And that's everything I have for now! I'm still playing FXIII, but I might make a separate entry about that at a later date!

small post

I have updated my sketchblog with some autoposts for ~a week and a half - that will start from Tuesday. I hadn't updated since September! But that was when I had my last holiday from work, so that sort of makes sense.

But also I seem to have been drawing a lot, but not posting a lot of it. Mainly because it either feels like more of the same (and therefore not imaginative*), or I didn't think it was good enough to post.

I've also updated my Redbubble shop with one (1) new design. I did it yesterday, and I'm really pleased with how it came out, although now I wish I hadn't drawn it on layout paper, but such are the regrets of an artist, I guess.

~

In other news, my tablet arrived on the day it was meant to, and it works like a dream. It is smaller than I thought, but I am bad at imagining screen dimensions at the best of times.

I've watched a few streams on it, and the only times it buffered were because of problems on the streamer's end and not mine! \o/ which is categorically not what used to happen with the old one.

I am looking forward to being able to use it to update - for example - my ko-fi gallery, and possibly even my sketchblog!

~

*this is my brain being an ass, btw.

1. I now have a copy of Kingsglaive. I haven't watched it yet, but I thought about taking notes while I did, but I honestly think it will mostly consist of "WHY WASN'T THIS IN THE GAME????"

2. I bought myself a new tablet on Sunday, somewhat impulsively. It is allegedly arriving at some point before 3PM today (the Royal Mail at least say on their website/tracking page that delays are possible for a variety of reasons, so if it doesn't arrive on a given date, apologies because they're trying their best).

I do need one, because my old one is slow and horrible (it's an Acer and, while they make decent laptops, their tablets are horrible. Or, at least, this one is. I have no desire to ever try another one again). I felt bad about it, because I always do, but I also realised it will work out to my benefit.

It has a decent amount of space on it (32Gb), which can be expanded with a memory card to up to 1Tb!

The reason it will work to my benefit is that I can use it for uploading WiPs to my ko-fi gallery, which is what I'd planned to do for subscribers. I will post about it when it happens, in case you are interested in subscribing (but, as always, no obligation!) That's not the only thing I can use it for, but it'll also save having to transfer pics to my computer and then upload them from there.

3. I finished watching the LP of Chocobo's Dungeon and it is delightful! I love Chocobo, and I'm pretty sure Squeenix do a plush of him, and you bet I want one.

Update: YES THEY DO.

4. I thought I had more things to say than this, but apparently not! I guess my brain is too full with the possibility of my tablet arriving at any given moment!
My phone line is finally fixed! Praise the sun! \o/

I mean, it's only taken like, two frikking months, but at least I have a functioning landline again. I am going to make a formal complaint, and I have provided them with (negative) feedback when asked for it.

Like. Yes, pretty much everyone has mobile phones these days, and I do tend to give out my mobile number over my landline, but also, as I think I mentioned before, I have some relatives who only know my landline number (because they are elderly or only have landlines themselves). How else are they supposed to get in touch with me?

Of course, the first phone call I got once it was fixed was a spam call from someone asking if I was the homeowner, who then abruptly hung up once I said no. And then I got two mysterious calls asking for my mum, which I think was the opticians she used to use, who had forgot to update their list the last time I told them she was no longer with us.

~

In other news, I started a New Game+ of Persona 5, because apparently that's what I'm fixating on at the moment!

I am ~16hrs in, and have just finished the second palace for the second time! boss fight spoiler )

I've also managed to fuse some demons I didn't get last go round (MATADOR!) so now the compendium is over half full! I don't think I'll ever fill it, but I don't mind? I've never managed to before, so why worry now. I will also never platinum this game* (there's a few fiddly trophies and just. nope). But also I never worry about achievements/trophies anyway? I kind of lol if I manage to unlock something, but it doesn't bother me if I don't get stuff. HENCE, not bothering if I complete the compendium or not.

EDIT: this is the only SMT game where I have not done a "collect ALL the angels" thing, partly because I didn't encounter even low level ones for so long that by the time they started showing up regularly, I'd forgotten about it. Also the lowest level one kept spamming Hama on me, AND it kept hitting, and that annoyed me (and I am nothing if not petty) [/edit]

I am obviously still enjoying it, and it doesn't matter now if I stop playing, because I've already beaten it.

~

*Wow, only 2.4% of people who've played this game have platinumed it. WOW. Although the percentages for trophies make me sad in general. I almost wish they weren't a thing, but also it's interesting to see how many people did get them.

My phone line is still not working properly. It's two weeks since I last contacted my provider about it, and they said it was due to be fixed the day after I spoke to them.

Yeah. 'Cause that happened, didn't it?

It's been like, six weeks in total. I wouldn't mind, since I don't tend to get a lot of phone calls anyway (and most of those are spam), but I have relatives who only know my landline number. If they need to get in touch with me, they can't.

Also: this is the second time this year! We are not even in June yet!

I stg if it didn't feel so overwhelming AND I hadn't just renewed my contract, I'd switch to somewhere else.

~

As I suspected, I don't like normal Roiboos. It tastes, smells, and looks too much like ordinary black tea for my liking. Which is kind of weird, given I know Roiboos and the black tea plant aren't related. But I can't stand black tea, which is why I don't drink it.

So the other day, I found myself in Holland & Barrett, looking at their range of fruit teas, and ended up buying one that has spearmint in it*. It's mostly fruit, but has the mint as a tangy note. Not sure I'm sold on it yet, but I've only drunk it twice.

Anyway, I discovered as well, that Holland & Barrett do a massive range of gluten-free stuff! Which is amazing, since I have not been managing so well at being gluten-free since I went back to work. I did think about getting food deliveries, since the bigger supermarkets also have gluten-free stuff, but I literally pass by H&B on my way to work/on the way back home, so it's nice to have another option (although I've said it before and I'll say it again: HOLY FUCK GLUTEN-FREE STUFF IS EXPENSIVE).

~

In Persona 5 news, you will possibly be pleased to hear that I am almost at the end of the game! I am in the final dungeon, and I have some things to say!

The first of which is not a spoiler, but that I genuinely think Shoji Meguro is one of my favourite composers, and oh boy, does he know how to write a tune that gets stuck in your head! I woke up yesterday morning with the boss fight theme in my head for no apparent reason (although mostly it's been either Last Surprise (the battle theme) or Beneath the Mask, since they're the two tracks I've heard the most).

I mean, I have liked his stuff for a long time at this point, but something about this game's soundtrack and Strange Journey's just absolutely nailed it for me.

So, onto the spoilers, for they are here! And also large!

I think that's all I have to say for now? I will probably remember five hundred things after I've hit post (as is always the way).

Also I decided at some point that I'm going to watch a Let's Play of Persona Q, and PQ:2, since I doubt I'll ever play them.

~

*I avoid mint tea also because as a concept it just feels wrong and, while I like mint stuff, I have strong not good feelings about minted peas, mint ice cream, and mint tea.

Totally didn't buy a notebook and a pen I don't need because they were on sale. Nope, not me. Nor any MT washi tapes in neon colours. Nope, don't know what you're talking about.

~

I have more phone woes! My landline is almost completely dead! Like, not even fuzzy, there's nothing that happens when I press the call button. And it's like it was before, in that I can get incoming calls, but it doesn't register them as having been answered - but it's only been like that since yesterday. I wouldn't have even twigged anything was wrong, but that I have had a suspicious lack of spam calls lately. This was supposed to be fixed, ISP!! *shakes fists*

I've reported it to them - that was almost two weeks ago now, and I re-reported it on Wednesday, but I didn't get a text saying they were looking into it, so who knows what the heck is happening. (I just checked on the website, and they say they're looking into it, and will try to resolve it ASAP. So hopefully that's what happens!)

~

After a while of being as gluten-free as possible, this is what I've noticed:

food related stuff )

~

I'm considering buying a copy of Monster Hunter World! I've previously been put off the games because I have a friend who is very into the series, and talks about them a bit like the way people talk about Dark Souls - i.e. "You need to learn enemy attacks and that's how you win!" (he thankfully doesn't call people scrubs or tell them to git gud, however). So I've always kind of avoided them. But I've been watching gameplay videos on youtube, and it looks like it might be fun? Also I want a cat friend!

There's a copy available at my local CEX, so I'm hoping it'll still be there tomorrow before/after work (I could click and collect it, but I'd rather do it this way, IDK why).

The phone engineer came on Thursday morning out to sort my landline and now everything is REALLY fixed, for reals this time. Phew.

He even updated the box inside my house so that I don't have to use a splitter, and the phone and router just plug straight into the wall! AMAZING.

While that was going on (because he had to do more work outside my house at the junction box), I saw that Aoife from Eurogamer was streaming The Medium, so I decided to have a look at it. I'd already watched Oxbox's gameplay video of it, and decided it wasn't too scary, and I told myself could always switch the stream off if it was. Well, folks, it was so not scary, that I decided to watch the follow up stream the next day and by god I wish I hadn't. Not because it suddenly became scary, but because the story's treatment of several sensitive issues made me extremely angry. It's two days later and I'm still fuming about it.

I debated whether to make a key smashy entry, but decided against it (for now). I'm still tossing up whether to write a full blown entry about it or not as, to some degree, I won't have much to add to what's already been said about it by other people. Although possibly I could do it for the purposes of being cathartic. We'll see. No promises.

Other than that, nothing interesting has happened, except that my second hand copies of the Matrix soundtracks came. I haven't listened to them yet, but they all seem to be in pretty good nick, which is what you'd hope for.

Jan. 27th, 2021 11:18 am

Since it will be my fortieth birthday in just under two weeks, I decided that I am going to buy myself The Matrix trilogy on blu ray. Yes, that means I will own the original film FOUR TIMES on three different media (VHS, DVD*, blu ray). I'm not getting the 4K version, since although my PS4 says it has HDR, I don't know if it can handle 4K, and I'm pretty sure my TV can't. So just the bog standard boxset for me.

Relatedly: I bought second hand copies of the soundtracks I don't own, which includes the original score from the first film. I have a taped copy from way back when, and how I've never managed to pick up a CD copy in all this time, I have no idea.

And then I made the mistake of watching some videos about the trilogy the other day. A couple were about why the sequels were better than you thought/good (although I don't need convincing). One of them was like, "well the og film isn't perfect anyway, why are you complaining!" and um, nobody said it was perfect? Just sit your arse down and...I dunno, stop thinking about things too hard?

Also watching those videos reminded me that a lot of complaints I heard about Reloaded came back full force after Jupiter Ascending got released**. Which just makes me think: I'm sorry? Are films not supposed to be fun? Does everything have to make absolute sense? No, it doesn't, and they absolutely should be! I watch films to enjoy myself, is everyone else not doing that?

WRT my phone/internet woes last week: the landline has remained...weird. There's no dial tone and, although people can call me, if I answer the phone it just sounds like it's ringing out to somewhere. I also can't make outgoing calls. So today I finally did a line test again, and they were like, "Oh, there is actually a fault! You need to book an engineer!" I had been hoping it would fix itself, or someone else would get them to come out, but I might be the only person on the street who actually still has a landline. So someone is coming tomorrow morning! I don't know what they're going to do, but I kind of wish this had been fixed a week ago? (Although my ISP was telling me there was no fault on the landline when I knew darn well there was).

Oh well, hopefully the person coming tomorrow can sort it, and then I will be back to getting mad at spam/scam callers thinking I am my mother, and correcting people who thought they'd rung the local junior school (their phone number is ONE number different from mine, and it's such an easy mistake to make).

*I have the entire trilogy plus The Animatrix twice on DVD at this point, so uh, yeah.

**I still haven't watched it yet, but I am absolutely going to after I've watched Revolutions. Because I've been rewatching the trilogy because WHY NOT.

I won't bore you with the details, but I had no internet for an entire day because my router went kaput! I didn't know that was a thing that really happened, given the previous one had been repeatedly knocked over by cats/me, and had been Really Old, and yet somehow kept on working.

Anyway, I rang my ISP customer service, and they said the problem was the router, and would send me a new one, free of charge! The lady I spoke to said it would be with me within two to three days, so I was anticipating a long three days.

It arrived while I was out of the house yesterday. I plugged everything in, and it all works, and we're all good again, yaaaaaay!

While my internet was out, however, I played some more FFV Advance, and I only have Exdeath/Neo Exdeath left to beat! I came really close to it last night - I managed to kill 3/4 of the parts, and got the fourth one so low it started doing desperation attacks (which suck ass, btw). And then I tried it again and failed miserably, so eh.

I think I may have to grind some job levels (*eye roll*). I already did an EXP grinding run to get Lenna to the same level as everyone else (41). I don't know if it helped much, and she always levels last.

I guess the thing to do next is finish up Diablo III, since I am similarly close to the end of that. I thought about playing Dark Souls II, after, because IDK I hate myself? ;) (Fandom will have you believe it is The Worst Souls Game EVER™ but we'll see).

Finally, IDK if anyone is interested, but yesterday afternoon/evening, I finally got around to watching Johnny and Wheels livestream playing The Thousand Year Old Vampire, which is a solo RPG, but can be played as a communal game (which is sort of what they did here - they did the writing, and threw open decisions to the livestream chat). Part two is here.

I can only think the reason I didn't watch it live was because Luke was streaming Demon's Souls at the time, and it's taken me this long to catch up on it again because reasons??? (Probably me forgetting I wanted to watch it and it not coming up in my yt recs, I should think).

I'm proper getting into the idea of solo RPGs, which I didn't know were a thing that existed until Dicebreaker mentioned them. There's a few I want to play (I specifically want to play The Machine and then pass it on to my friend Chris, but I think both of us are going to need to not be in a bad mindset before playing it, because it isn't cheerful). I don't know that I want to play The Thousand Year Old Vampire (esp if it's as depressing as the prompts make out. Though teenage me would've eaten it up because ANGST). But it's nice to know there are options out there for someone who can't or doesn't want to play with other people.

As usual, I have no idea how to end this post, so I'm just going to stop here and hit "post".

I have Babby's First Ever Video Call tomorrow, and I am crapping myself about it. So much so I already had a stress dream about it a couple of nights ago.

I've been put on this job thing, to help me with finding work, and one of the things they could offer was an interview skills workshop type thing. I said yes to it, because I've barely ever had interviews anyway, and most of them were ages ago. And then the guy who was booking me in was like, "Oh yeah, it'll be online, via Teams," and I....well, I didn't feel I could refuse, but I'm not very happy about it. (Apparently I can just use it in my browser, rather than having to use the program, so that's good to know!)

It should be fine, anyway. I don't think it'll be longer than an hour, and it can't be worse than attending that sort of thing IRL, can it?

I went to work wearing my skelly costume yesterday, and actually got a few compliments on it! \o/

~

In other news, I absolutely cheesed the Bell Gargoyles in Dark Souls by summoning not only Solaire, but also Lautrec of Carim. I got, like, a few hits in, but they did most of the work, and I don't care.

I also had one occasion before that where I put the pine resin stuff on my sword, charged in, got one hit, and promptly fell off the roof, because stuff like that happens!

Some of the physics, and the stupid ways I've died absolutely remind me of Enter the Matrix, which is a game I was hilariously bad at, back in the day. I don't think I ever beat it, but I was playing on a Gamecube borrowed from my friend at the time, so possibly I gave it back before I was done.

Anyway, my next boss is the Capra Demon (o boy). I'm going to attempt cheesing it by either throwing firebombs (or dung pies) over the top of the fog door, or hitting it with the Drake Sword. There's no summon (afaik) because it's an "easier" boss. (Some players will tell you summoning is cheating, but it's put into the game for a reason. That reason being that if you're having trouble with a boss, you can summon NPC support).

And then I have the joy that is the Depths/Blighttown to look forward to!
The other day, I discovered the PS4 controller has motion controls??? I did not know this! (It flicked on by accident while I was making an account for my nephew to use next time he plays something on the console). Apparently the PS3 has them as well???

I don't know that there's a whole lot you can use it for, because I think for motion stuff, Sony want you to use the Move controller.

But this is why consoles should still have proper manuals, GDI! I have had this console for nearly a year, and only just discovered this, w t f

I think I might like playing action games, y'all.

I decided to check on my Dark Souls save from 2017, and discovered I did not get very far at all. I actually wondered if it was because I didn't know how to level or something daft like that.

And...then I continued on playing, beat the Asylum Demon extremely easily in one go, and got as far as the Undead Burg. Which admittedly is not far, but I did take a detour to New Londo Ruins by accident. I also got mushed by the skellies in the graveyard near the Firelink Shrine because I didn't know which way to go to start.

MAPS, FROM SOFTWARE! THEY WOULD BE USEFUL!

(Here I hear Aoife from Eurogamer in my head saying that she likes that From games don't have maps, because then you have to explore and. Well, yeah, but also you have to explore when you have a map, because you don't necessarily know where any of it leads to. The same things could well have happened to me had I not had a map).

Also I kept wasting estus because I kept hitting X/square for attack instead of R1 (I think that's because X/square is attack in Kingdoms of Amalur, and that's the last console game I played). So I kept having to truck it back to a bonfire to reload, so to speak.

I don't know that I will continue playing, but it's given me confidence that I might be all right with Sekiro (if I ever get a copy) and has even piqued my interest in Nioh, which I had next to no interest in before, because it was inspired by Dark Souls.

I have also been watching Aoife play Ghost of Tsushima, and I like the idea in principle, but something about it makes me feel uneasy (maybe I'll be able to tap into why better when I watch Ellen play it?) The character models are a bit uncanny valley for me - they don't look in proportion, and the faces don't look right, imo (though I had this problem with ME:A, so maybe it'll pass once I get used to it). However, I do like that the majority of the English speaking cast is Asian, even if they aren't all Japanese or of Japanese descent (I imagine the pool of Japanese-American actors is small, and that of voice actors is even smaller). I'm glad Sucker Punch didn't cop out on the English voice track just being American accents regardless of time period (or a bunch of white actors doing offensive accents, for that matter).

And then finally on the "maybe I like action games" thing, my hand slipped and I bought the HD version of Okami for my PS4, when I already own the PS2 version. I shouldn't have looked up how much secondhand copies of the original are, admittedly, but I was doing it out of curiosity, and of course, the HD version came up in the results. I do want more games for my PS4, but I shouldn't be spending money I don't have on games I don't need (which why I'm still holding off FFXV and Horizon Zero Dawn, and definitely Sekiro, plus a whole other bunch of games I want).

So yeah. It's possible I only like action games with certain themes or settings, like Mass Effect is the only shooter I'll probably ever play. I guess we will see!

~

Outside Xbox, Dicebreaker, and Eurogamer did ANOTHER multi channel Among Us Stream!

(I'm linking these because I find them hilarious, and I will never play Among Us because I don't have enough friends to play with :( and I would find it super stressful).

I don't have much to say, except that the new scanner/printer combo is a dream. Having an Epson scanner again is really making me appreciate how shitty the Canon one actually was. (I'm still mad it broke after so little time, though).

I did some test prints yesterday after rescanning and editing a bunch of stuff, and they look AMAZING. Now I've just got to get some more A4 photo paper, and figure out what to put in the description box in Etsy, and they can go up! \o/

(I was considering moving my shop from Etsy to one that integrates with my website but it's actually cheaper for me to be on Etsy right now (even if they do take a chunk of my profits, which they do). So yeah. I will update here when everything is go!)

Meanwhile, in meme land:

[personal profile] thenicochan asks: Do you have a favorite TV series? If so, what would you say it is?

FAAAAAAARSCAPE!

*ahem*

I mean, possibly Buffy as well, but I didn't go off Farscape like I did Buffy (not looking forward to rewatching S5+ is all I'm saying). But then again, Farscape wasn't around long enough for me to go off it, which is something I'm very, very pleased about. (I mean, I wasn't happy about the cancellation at the time, but in hindsight it proved to be a good thing).

I think that a lot of my love for this show, in some ways, is nostalgia. At the end of this year, it will be twenty years since it first aired in the UK. I was nobbut eighteen at the time. I watched it from the very beginning to the very end. I went on the internet to talk to other people about it, and I made a lot of friends that way. The fandom was pretty much very good, we all got on, and there was no in-fighting, or arguing over ships, or any of the things that seem to consistently wreck fandoms these days. There were the odd troll or two on the BBoard I was on, but they were few and far between.

But yeah. It's a story about John Crichton, an astronaut. Who ends up being a fish out of water but IN SPACE! It is funny, sad, hopeful, really sad, but also a very compelling story. It's an Australian produced show, and that shows so hard in the humour. And there are muppets! Rygel, one of the main characters, is a muppet, but he's so well acted (both by his puppeteer and his voice actor) that you forget he's a muppet. Same for Pilot.

The character designs are awesome. The ladies kick ass! (There's literally only one character who starts off as a screaming, ahhhh protect me! type, and she ends up kicking ass in the end. I hated her when she first came in. I missed her like burning when she left). Crichton isn't perfect! Things get fucked up on the regular! The end isn't all happy, happy, joy, joy (I mean, it isn't a downer, but it's also not all shiny).

So yes, I do have a favourite TV series. I'm due a rewatch - me and mum were going to watch it together, but I think I might hold off for a little bit because of that, at the moment. Anyway, I've got the rest of Buffy and FFXII to get through first ;)

I just had to order a new scanner.

My old one, which I have had for just under three years, at some point between July last year and...whenever I last scanned stuff (a couple of months ago, I think), developed a judder when the scanner head got to a certain point in the scan. I didn't think anything of it at first, except that when I went to image edit today, I discovered that that judder makes a smeary looking jerk in the image.

Some of this stuff was intended for printing, so that's no good.

I opted for an Epson XP-455 (I think that's the right number???) as it was on offer on PC World's website for £40 instead of one hundred. It's an All-In-One, so it copies, scans, and prints. I was going to spend ~£50 on just a flatbed scanner, so I think I got a bargain? I also bought some ink which should work with it, and got some money off that, too (I can always return it if it turns out it's incompatible, but it shouldn't be). I also paid for next day delivery, since that wasn't really going to make a difference in the price, and I didn't want another fiasco like the art supplies delivery.

Anyway, yeah, one of the things I was hoping to do this year was offer prints of my stuff, sold by me, rather than via somewhere like Redbubble, so hopefully I can do that! Also this new printer/scanner combo is able to print both sides of paper, which is awesome, as I was also planning on making books/zines.

Post Once A Day Meme:

[personal profile] lassarina asks: Is there a piece of media you didn't like at first, but grew to love? Why?

I assume we're talking TV/video games/music here, not art supplies? I mean, I can answer that, too (probably), but for now I'll stick to visual stuff.

There's a whole stack of games I didn't like at first but slowly they grew on me. Some of them are Final Fantasies - so V, VI, and probably IX (! which is a surprise, but I didn't like Zidane at first). V and VI, it took replaying them to make me realise that actually they were okay (apart from the Arcaeoaevis in the Ancient Ruins in V, but I think it's That One Boss for that game). I think I may have played them not that long after VII, so the jump backwards in graphics and gameplay was a surprise, probably.

I didn't like The Last Remnant, either, when I first played that - I'm still not good at commanding my units, but I like the story/character stuff more than the actual fighting. I didn't think I was going to like Mass Effect, either, because it was the first shooter I'd ever played and...I can't hit the broad side of a barn on a good day. But it is like every eighties cliché about science fiction, including the soundtrack, and I LOVE.

(There are probably even more games than this, but my mind is drawing a blank).

Again, with music, there's a whole stack of stuff - a lot of times with that, my exasperation is hearing it too much on the radio/adverts, and then maybe I'll come back to it years later, and it won't sound as bad. My most recent "hey I actually like this!" is At The River by Groove Armada, which I hated for almost twenty years. And pretty much everything The Beach Boys ever did - although that started when I watched a thing about how they put together Good Vibrations, and that was really interesting.

I can't really say anything about TV because there's no shows I like where that was the case? I wasn't gripped by Farscape when I first saw it, but I didn't dislike it.

For films, I'd say Bladerunner. The first time I saw it was the original cut, with the voice over and it was...Not Good. Thank frogs for the director's cut, is all I'm saying.

(Sorry if this wasn't the answer you were after. Like I said, I can probably do the alternative).
# I've spent most of the past week playing mobile games on my phone. I don't care! This is the most video games I've played in ages! (I have abandoned the Earthbound LP, which is not good, I suppose, but I want to be doing, not just watching. Weirdly, I've left off in the same place I had a hiatus in the game when I played it myself (which is in Scaraba, though I was in the pyramid, and the LP is at the beginning of Dungeon Man's dungeon) ).

# I was able to get an early upgrade from EE, so I opted for a Sony Xperia XA1, which is not the newest model, but I don't care. I rarely ever have the most up to date phone anyway. This one was good, though, because I've also upgraded my data allowance (from 2Gb per month to 10Gb) - as when I was out a lot last summer, I kept hitting my limit, so hopefully this will avoid that! (And it's the same price as I'm paying now, so it's all good).

I ordered it mere hours ago and it is arriving tomorrow!!! Apparently I have to provide photo ID to prove it's coming to the right person, but I don't actually have any photo ID (I don't drive, and I've never left the country). I hope there won't be a problem, though. I didn't know before I put the order in that I'd need ID. *crosses fingers and toes*

# I just ordered a memory card that is twice the capacity of my new phone, oh my.

# I've only slept two nights on my new mattress, and badly to boot, but I feel better rested? Which is good news. Just hope I can get some better sleep in soon!
Still watching Lost. Up to episode six of season six.

mumblings; potential spoilers )

Relatedly, we had to get a new DVD player because we'd had the old one for years. I think it's lasted well, considering it was a cheap make, and it was a freebie. So we got a Sony one and it's kind of amazing?? If you plug an HDMI cable (which I did, because we don't have the other kind of cable it can take), it will upscale your DVD to HD automatically. The sound quality is great. And it has a USB slot so you can plug in a memory stick and play music or watch videos!! (Though I can do that with the TV anyway, as it also has a USB slot). And it's so small! And light!

Anyway, I'm really impressed with it, because everyone in Lost looks even more awesome than usual. (And nobody sounds like they're mumbling any more, which is great!)

~

I have been writing a lot recently! I'm taking my third stab at attempting to get a finished version of the abominations story which, I suppose, makes it like the third draft or something. Except I've totally gutted everything and started from the ground up. Sort of. The details are the same, it just happens differently.

I'm writing it all out by hand, because the computer offers too many distractions. So I have no idea how many words that is. I'm not putting in too much detail (going to do that on the second pass on the computer) - I'm just trying to get the characters from A to B so that C can happen, and then D. And you know what? I think I actually have a three act story? I'm still in the first at the moment, but C definitely is in the second, and D is in the third.

*horrified gasp*

My characters are being recalcitrant, but that is really no different from the norm, tbh.

~

It's my birthday tomorrow. I'm going to be 36. My birthday really snuck up on me this year. But I kind of don't mind. I said to mum earlier that I'm kind of past the point of caring about them. I just kind of feel now like, "Oh, another year has passed", because I really don't feel any different than I did several years ago. In fact my brain keeps going, "We're thirty six? NO FREAKING WAY, MAN!" because I really don't feel it.
