I discovered a couple of new (and inspiring) artists thanks to a combo of IG/Pinterest, which was nice.

I've not really been feeling the urge to draw much this year, but thanks to the one artist, I started again, a bit, just messing around, and I really enjoyed it! Turns out I miss drawing, who knew! Also because of them, I made a 12 page sketchbook from some heavy weight kraft card that I have - they draw on toned paper, and for once I actually found it kind of inspirational*. So I am going to draw a bit in that and see how I like it.

(I did not find any of my white pens - including a Posca! - failing to show up properly on the card very inspirational, though).

~

I also bought myself my first lot of proper alcohol markers! I feel incredibly guilty about it (because spending money), but I have been wanting to buy some for most of the year, if not longer.

(Although if I am honest, I have actually wanted alcohol markers since I was at high school and my D&T teacher showed the class some work he'd done with some. I thought they looked really cool, but then thought no more about it for years afterwards).

Like. Sharpies are nice and all, but they are not art supplies, and they stink to high heaven.

So I got myself two sets of Spectrum Noir markers from the Range! I have the Floral set and the Blue blending set. I wanted the Turquoise one, but they didn't have it in stock at the store I went to, but there was the blue one, and I am nothing if not biased re: colours.

I also picked up two more packs of Daler Rowney Simply marker paper in Poundland, as they were 50p for ten sheets, so at least I won't feel like I'm wasting it if I just use it for swatches or trying something out. I swatched the Spectrum Noir markers, and they look really nice on it! Unlike the Sharpies, which I tried out a few months back.

I partly bought the markers because I've been doing a lot more drawing this past week or so and, because, as I said, I wanted them, and it was sort of a treat for getting a job. Also they're WAY cheaper than Copics, and I don't have immediate access to any of the other brands, especially not refillable ones.

And I also found a use for a terrible sketchbook I've had for years! Turns out it works really nicely with gel pens and Sharpies, and I kind of wish I'd realised that when I bought it, but I wasn't using either thing at the time (I bought it just after Xmas 2018, according to the order email). But if I can use it to practice marker technique/mess with gel pens, that's fine by me. I wouldn't have even though about getting it out, but that another artist I found via Pinterest uses a sketchbook of the same brand (but which, for whatever weird reason, seems to be only available in Australia, when it is a British brand??? I DIGRESS). So I thought about pulling mine out to see what would happen. And it was a positive result, so yay!

I will probably never buy another one of this brand - although I have one in a smaller size because it was mum's and she never got to using it - but I'm glad I no longer feel like it was a waste of money.

~

Finally, in more whiny news, I have been in absolute agony with my hands hurting A LOT over the past week. So much so, that I considered going back to the doctor but a) I'm positive they'll say there's nothing wrong, like the condescending physio did last November and b) I'll get put on painkillers, which I do not want.

They're still hurting now, but they're not as bad - although as I type this, they do feel stiff, and I feel clumsy typing.

Also my toe joints decided to join in, just for funsies. They've not been as bad, but even so. I am far from amused.

I guess I'll see how it goes over the next couple of weeks or so. It comes and goes anyway, but this last week was the worst it's been and I don't know why.

~

*I like drawing on coloured/toned paper, but I don't choose to do it as often as I do drawing on white/off white paper.
This post has ended up being a day late but, in my defence, I have been very tired, and I didn't remember until I was about to go sleep last night. (Tiredness caused by a) lack of sleep and b) starting a new volunteer job).

So please accept my apologies.

Anyway, [personal profile] lassarina wanted to know about book binding, and so here we are!

I have been interested in it for a long time, but I couldn't tell you how long. I do know that ~10 years ago, my friend Annette lent me a book about it, which had all sorts of different ways to make books, but mostly they were as art pieces, rather than functional books, so to speak. I learnt to make a book by saddle stitching (or pamphlet stitching as it sometimes known - I think it hinges on the number of holes you need versus the way you stitch it). And then at some point I forgot I even knew how to do that, and learnt some other ways to make books (perfect binding, which is a glued spine; and a stapled spine). And then, for some reason, I was convinced that I would never be able to go any further than that, because you needed all this expensive equipment (e.g. a proper awl, or a book press).

And that, my friends, is when I found Sea Lemon's videos on youtube. She doesn't just do book binding videos, but it is one of the things she's known for. I watched her videos for coptic stitching and kettle stitching books, and immediately was consumed with the need to try it for myself. So I did, while mildly ill because it was a hot August, heat does that to me, and I didn't know to make myself sit t f down instead.

And then I just kept making books. I have an entire stack that I have barely touched. Some of them I made to repurpose old sketchbooks or pads, and some are experiments, like the one with double sided printer paper in it.

What I like about it is that I can make a book to suit me. I can make A5 books with blank paper, because that's what I like using. I made a 8x8 inch sketchbook, because I like that size and it's rare, even in square sketchbooks*. I can put on the covers anything I like (including my own art if I wanted to!)

I figure that the reason I love it so much is because it's a combination of two things I really like: books and sewing. Also I just like making stuff, and I always have.

I find it soothing to do. It's rarely frustrating, and I find it very easy to hyperfocus on.

And you don't need fancy stuff to make books! I use the point of a compass instead of an awl, and I put my books under bigger, heavier books to press overnight, because I don't have a book press. Turns out I do have waxed linen thread, although I didn't know that till very recently, but I've experimented with other kinds of thread, too.

I mean, if I were going to turn this into a living (I'm not), then I would invest in an awl, and acid free PVA, and I'd make book cloth, and so on, and so forth. But I'm not. I'm just making books for me, and that makes me happy.

~

*Pink Pig make them to order, which is fine, they're a decent price. I don't think the biggest size Seawhite do is 8x8 in squares, though. I could be wrong about that, I don't know.

Today's question from the Post Once A Day Meme comes from [personal profile] honigfrosch, who asks: What's the art/craft that you've made the most progress in over recent years, and was there something you found really helpful for getting better at it?

I was going to say book binding, given I didn't even know how to do it two and a half years ago. But. I don't really feel that I've made a lot of progress, because I almost always bind books in the same way, and I haven't tried anything complicated in a long time (I am currently being baffled by concertina books. I can't get my head around sticking the pages together correctly so they always come out weird).

The answer I am going to give is printing. I feel like I've learnt a lot more about that in the same space of time I've been book binding. Especially in the last few months or so.

I honestly think the thing that's helped the most is youtube videos or IG reels! I think it sounds kind of corny, but I like being able to see how things are done, rather than following written instructions, because sometimes I have trouble with them. Also, a lot of artists on youtube are less likely to be gatekeepery or overly technical than books on the subject and/or people/classes IRL.

It's the reason I like Yeates Makes' videos so much. He explains things in a very easy to understand and accesible way, and he almost always uses stuff you can find lying around your house (except the sticker paper for the laser print transfer technique he uses, but that's the only out of the way thing). His content is a bit repetitive, but I understand why (also I think he is refining his technique as he goes, but I can't say for sure as I haven't watched one of his videos for a while because I am currently being distracted by other stuff, heh).

But yeah, I definitely feel like printing is the area where things have improved the most, even if I don't really have much to show for it at the moment.

muladhara: (grumpy)
I feel like a whiner saying the following, but dang it, this is my g dang journal, and I am going to whine!

On Tuesday, when I went for that lovely walk and recorded the birds, I then had a migraine for the rest of the day! (I suspected this would happen before I went out, as I sometimes get a weird feeling behind my left eye, although I don't always get the migraine the same day that happens). It wasn't as bad as sometimes, but it was still Not Great.

Then on Wednesday and Thursday, I somehow managed to have a food related problem with a type of food that does not usually cause me problems. I scoured the ingredients list several times, looking for something that could have caused it. There was nothing. The food was in date. My digestive system just decided to have a tantrum, I guess!

(And I know it was that, because I stopped eating it/put the remainder in the food recycling, and now I am fine).

Then Friday, one of my teeth decided to start hurting. It didn't interrupt my sleep too much, but combine that with it being a very hot night*, and the teenager up the street who likes to play loud music, and I did not have a good night's rest.

And then I wondered why going food shopping yesterday wore me out!

And you know what the worst part of this is? I HAD PLANS! I was going to be sociable! And work on my ko-fi! And my body essentially went, "LOL NOPE". Thanks, me, that was great.

I did manage to get an idea in motion for a set of two prints, though, and I bound a book, so it's not all bad? The prints were originally going to be the member only ones, but I thought considering the designs (mushrooms), they might sell well, so I will now have to think of something else!

Also my new favourite streamer started playing Deltarune, so obviously I watched that. I'm glad I finished it before he started playing it - though there was only about a week between my finishing and his starting, so that was a weird coincidence.

Other than that, it's mostly been me feeling sorry for myself!

~

*It didn't get quite as hot here as the forecast predicted (24°C actual temp versus 27° predicted), but it was still enough to make my house feel gross.
I am approximately halfway through Equal Rites. I could have finished it by now, but my weasel brain is still weasely around books for some reason. Everything else, I have kind of slid back into*, although it has taken its time, except for reading and writing. Although I feel a bit like I'm getting there, I just wish it would happen a little bit faster.

Anyway, I am enjoying Equal Rites, and it doesn't feel like a chore to read. It does feel a little bit familiar in parts, and I wonder if I have read it but just don't remember (entirely possible). Although I think some of the familiarity is that some of it covers the same ground as one of the Tiffany Aching books (which I've read 3/5 of), wherein Granny Weatherwax is teaching a young 'in Witchy Things™. Anyway, it doesn't matter, because I'm enjoying it, and that's what counts!

~

I made another book yesterday, because apparently I can't help myself!

But I wanted to experiment to see if I could make a book with pages interleaved with something else to protect (most of) the inbetween pages if, say, you did a lot of drawing in pencil or other potentially smudgy media. And I did! (Card interleaved with layout paper. I thought about using tracing paper, but I've got more layout paper, so I thought I'd use that).

However, I used a cover off an old notebook for the cover of this book, and because it had had a shiny cover, the paper I stuck to it wrinkled a bit because the glue didn't absorb properly. So that's something to bear in mind for the future. Also the text block isn't sitting in it properly, but I've had that problem before, and I know exactly how to fix it.

(Oh, kettle stitch this, my brain says, it'll be easier than coptic stitching! Less faffing about!

Except w t f does my brain know, because this is what happened!)

Also did you know that I have now been making books for just over a year? Because I have! \o/ I'm really glad I learnt to make books this way, because I really enjoy it. Now I just have to use them all!

~

Outside Xtra did a Fall Guys stream which, as you will note, I don't usually link to. But I'm linking this one because of the extended conversation about playgrounds, and what your favourite thing on them is, and also Luke's question about what would you do if your teacher challenged you to a game of Street Fighter.

~

*Though it has been, somewhat, like when you go on a slide and get stuck partway down. So you set off again, only for it to happen once more.
Further to reading Favourite Books From My Youth™, I reread Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume. I haven't read it in decades, unlike the Christopher Pike, because it was one of those books I think I was afraid I wouldn't like once I was older (much like Archer's Goon and/or Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones, both of which I am happy to report I still love to bits).

Reading it as an adult once both your parents are dead is heck of an experience, let me tell you. I mean, I always got that it was a sad book, because the main character is dealing with the death of her father but wow, it hit me in a completely different place this time than when I read it as a teenager.

I like that it's such a short book! It's less than 150 pages! (I prefer short books, tbh. I have the attention span of a gnat, and I've always been like that, and anything over 300 pages is, generally, an automatic nope).

~

I made a couple more books the other day! (pic here)

I watched a video where someone made a square sketchbook and then I wanted to make one. I do not need to make any more books. I have a basket full of them. But, while I've made square books before, I have not made a square sketchbook, as it simply did not occur to me! Which is daft, because I think I like square ones the best!

So I reclaimed some cartridge paper (A3 size), cut it so it would make an 8x8 inch book, and used the offcuts to make a long sketchbook as well.

I won't get to use it for a while, since I am trying to use the books in the order I made them, but knowing it exists, and I made it is pretty neat.

~

In semi-related news, I have been having a ball drawing with various types of fineliners! I don't know how, when, or why I mostly stopped, but for some reason I did (probably around the time I started using biros to draw with all the time, but I'm not 100% on that, and I only think that because I was looking through some of my more recent sketchbooks yesterday*). But now I've started again! Hopefully, I shall continue to have fun with them!

~

*I regret to inform everyone who is concerned about the longevity of artist materials**, that a bunch of my sketchbooks, which are actually notebooks and not sketchbooks at all, do not have acid free paper, and have started yellowing across one edge, despite not being in direct sunlight. UM, WHOOPS.

**side-eyes at least one famous comics artist.
1. food related stuff )

2. I learnt Japanese four hole binding the other day, and it's super easy! (Like most book binding techniques I've learnt). I really like it for making short side bound A5 books.

3. It's The Return of the Mungus! (This is Outside Xtra's POV stream but there are THREE others from Outside Xbox, Dicebreaker, and Eurogamer, should you want to watch).

4. I realised yesterday that maybe I should have gone into a sciencey job because I like collecting data. I've been tracking the local temperature for nearly three years, my migraines for five, and various other bits and bobs for almost two. But then I remembered that science likely means maths, and I hate maths A LOT, so maybe not.

5. I gave up on Dark Souls II, probably to absolutely nobody's surprise.

6. I want to buy more fountain pens, because of course I do, but I am at least going to wait until I'm back in work again, so at least I can justify it because I'm earning money. I don't want to buy anything even as expensive as my Kaweco - I want a few more cheap ones, just to see what they're like.
I started playing Dark Souls II because apparently I hate myself? ;) I think it's because I'm watching Ellen play through DS1 on Outside Xtra, and it's making me want to go back to my DS1 save, but I also don't want to because urrgghh butchers. I know they're just pixels, but that really doesn't help.

So anyway, DS2 is easier than DS1, so far, imo. I mean, at least it has a proper tutorial area (provided you don't accidentally skip it, which is entirely possible). Although I still get annoyed with gravity, and with being mobbed, and my shield not fucking blocking anything! It works if I have it up before I encounter an enemy, but if I go from fighting to blocking, it doesn't? And it's not just me - I rewatched Aoife and Zoe playing the first part of the game, and Aoife has exactly the same problem! (Although Aoife is better at Souls games than me, simply because she doesn't go in hacking and slashing all over the place).

Oh, and the losing health when you die is some bullshit. Why, FromSoft, why?? I don't think it's quite as bad as in Demon's Souls, but I honestly can't remember, even though I've watched three playthroughs in the last six months(!) It's still gimmicky nonsense, though.

~

Anyway, in non-game related things, I made myself two more books! I suddenly got the urge a few evenings ago, so I folded a bunch of card and then finished them off the next day.

I also rebound a book I made about two years ago that was falling apart - it had been perfect bound, and not very well, since I didn't know what I was doing back then (also perfect binding is inefficient, imo). So I separated it all out and rebound it with single sheet binding. I also rounded the corners with a punch because I like rounded corners on things. However, the corners aren't square, so some of the rounding is a bit wonky.

You can see the finished books here, and the rebound book here.

I also made a book back in January, and can't remember if I mentioned it, but I didn't post a picture of it.

Other than that, not a lot else has been happening, I've just been drawing, and watching stuff on youtube, and avoiding going out unless I need to. Now I'm going to ill-advisedly browse the fountain pen subreddit.
A list, because why not?

A. I saw a deer! Outside my house this morning!

Well, two, actually. I think they're a mother and daughter (one looks younger, and they're significantly different colours to each other). I've seen them fairly regularly this year, which is the coolest thing!

B. I got a neat craft haul from work, which I jumped on, because there were washi tapes (I totally don't have a problem, I swear). And then I discovered there were shiny textured papers as well??? AWESOME! (I might take a pic for my sketchblog since it's been forever since I last updated there).

Bb. I decided since I have so many papers and stuff now, I ought to get on and make some collages.

C. I started a new game of Kingdoms of Amalur the other afternoon, since I was going to do that anyway, but then I watched Ellen from Outside Xtra streaming the remaster, and I thought why the heck not? So I did. (I didn't realise the remaster was out already, but I guess that shows me, eh).

I'm trying to make a magic user/stealthy type this time, as I did a warrior for my first playthrough (I tend to do that just to get a hang of the game). She is a Dokkalfar, with white eyes, red hair, and greener skin than I intended. I don't mind her having green skin, it just didn't look like that in the character creator *shakes tiny fists*

D. I made my first cloth covered book last week, and it came out (mostly) okay! I ended up gluing the text block in a little wonky, but I know how to fix that, so I'm probably going to do that soon. Again, I want to take pictures of the books I've made for my sketchblog, but with everything going on at the moment, I just haven't felt like I've had the energy.

E. I don't have an E, but as usual, I don't know how to end this entry!
With regard to sketchbooks: I started using one of the ones I made, so not using them didn't last very long, did it?? (I will probably default to printer paper anyway, though, because I'm basic).

ALTHOUGH. I suddenly solved a problem for myself! I really like the one notebook type I have been using as a sketchbook for five years now, except for a long time now I've wanted it as an A5 size, which they don't make (I can get A5 lined notebooks out the wazoo, though. But plain ones? NOPE).

My work friend's housemate was interested to learn about book binding, so I've been thinking of tips to tell her, and one of them was "buy a ream of printer paper and use that while you're practising". And suddenly, light dawned on me from above: I can make my own A5 blank sketchbooks! Which is, admittedly, what I've already been doing, but for some reason I didn't think of using printer paper, which is equivalent weight to the paper in the A4 books I already use!

I blame having been ill recently and not sleeping because of that dingbat earlier in the week. I think my brain's just not with it yet.

A list post, because I think that will be the most convenient format!

1. the 11th was the one year anniversary of me having a job! \o/

2. the night of the 11th was the hottest night this year, so I slept badly because of that. And then also one of the neighbour's teenagers was blasting music till past two thirty in the morning, and that didn't help ONE BIT. I suspect I know which teenager it was, but I don't have the guts to complain to their parents.

3. Because of this, I had to ask my boss if it was okay if I didn't work yesterday. I felt bad about it, but he was fine with it, which I thought he would be.

4. My nephew came to visit the other day, and we played Ocarina of Time on my Gamecube (got to the Deku Tree), and the Sims 3 on my Xbox (rebuilt the entire house). He really, really wanted to play my copy of City Folk, but I don't have a Wii. (Thinking about it, I should've just given it to take home with him, then he could've played it on his Wii, but I legit did not think of that until now).

5. I am still making books, because apparently I can't stop! I now have two (if not three) sketchbooks I've made from various types of paper/card, which is hella amusing when you consider that I stopped using sketchbooks.

If you check out the media tab on on my twitter, you can see some of what I've been up to!

6. Talking of sketchbooks! It's been a month since I stopped drawing in a sketchbook and...I don't know if I've missed it or not. I've done the same amount of drawing that I would've done had I been using one, so *shrug emoji*

It does feel nicer to just have a stack of paper and a clipboard - I suspect this is part of the reason I like spiral bound sketchbooks - because you can just fold the entire book in half, so you don't need so much space to accommodate it.

Also drawings on single sheets of paper are 900% easier to scan!

7. I thought I had a #7, but I do not!

I have been learning a new thing! I taught myself how to do kettle stitch binding for books, and now I have made two books using that method! There are things wrong with both books for different reasons, so I'd like to make another one to do things right this time, but I am still pretty proud of them! They look like actual books, and everything!

The first one, I made from paper from sketchpads that I knew I wasn't ever going to draw on. It's going to be some sort of scrapbook, I think. The second one I made from some card I'd got at work, so I will probably use it as some sort of sketchbook in the future. Or perhaps I will find another purpose for it!

~

In other news, I DNF'd Assassin's Quest the other day. It's not that I wasn't enjoying it, I just wish it weren't so thick, and that Robin Hobb got where she was going quicker. Oh well, perhaps I'll pick it up again at some point in the future.

One of my friends from work is going to lend me The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch which I am a bit eh about, but thought I'd give it a go. I'd never even heard of it until Johnny from Dicebreaker mentioned it several times, and I looked it up and was decidedly eh about it. But my friend has a copy, so I'll give it a go! (Although I don't know what to make of her saying, "it made me so angry! Right up until the end!" It's certainly an interesting way to sell me a book, I guess?)

She is also going to lend me a book called Vox by Christina Dalcher which, from the premise alone I am leery about. It's set in the future(?) where women are only allowed to say 100 words a day, and if they go over that they are punished. My friend told her housemate I'd love it, but IDK if she's got the wrong impression about Books I Might Like. But I will give it a go and see.

~

Okay, this has been sitting here a while, and I evidently have nothing else to say, so I am going to go away and sort out some paper for this next book.
