A list, because why not?

A. I saw a deer! Outside my house this morning!

Well, two, actually. I think they're a mother and daughter (one looks younger, and they're significantly different colours to each other). I've seen them fairly regularly this year, which is the coolest thing!

B. I got a neat craft haul from work, which I jumped on, because there were washi tapes (I totally don't have a problem, I swear). And then I discovered there were shiny textured papers as well??? AWESOME! (I might take a pic for my sketchblog since it's been forever since I last updated there).

Bb. I decided since I have so many papers and stuff now, I ought to get on and make some collages.

C. I started a new game of Kingdoms of Amalur the other afternoon, since I was going to do that anyway, but then I watched Ellen from Outside Xtra streaming the remaster, and I thought why the heck not? So I did. (I didn't realise the remaster was out already, but I guess that shows me, eh).

I'm trying to make a magic user/stealthy type this time, as I did a warrior for my first playthrough (I tend to do that just to get a hang of the game). She is a Dokkalfar, with white eyes, red hair, and greener skin than I intended. I don't mind her having green skin, it just didn't look like that in the character creator *shakes tiny fists*

D. I made my first cloth covered book last week, and it came out (mostly) okay! I ended up gluing the text block in a little wonky, but I know how to fix that, so I'm probably going to do that soon. Again, I want to take pictures of the books I've made for my sketchblog, but with everything going on at the moment, I just haven't felt like I've had the energy.

E. I don't have an E, but as usual, I don't know how to end this entry!
I beat Kingdoms of Amalur! It was a lot easier than I was expecting!

Expandspoilers! )

Also also holy bananas the Well of Souls is the Cauldron of Bran, isn't it???? I didn't realise this until I was watching Luke and Ellen from Outside Xtra playing the start and it suddenly occurred to me. I mean, obviously Amalur's version is way more wonky though.

So yeah, despite my gripes, glad I played it, very much enjoyed it.

Anyway, the exciting news (unless you follow me on twitter) is that I have a new phone!

I got a call on Tuesday afternoon from the EE shop in Burnley, and was informed that I was due an early upgrade, and I probably wouldn't have to pay anything towards it, but that they didn't know for sure.

So like an idiot I went yesterday after work, because if there's one thing I love, it's a phone upgrade.

After much deliberating, I went with a Huawei P Smart, because it sounded all right, and it comes in this lovely blue colour and, well, blue's my favourite colour. It has 64Gb of internal memory, which is LOADS (esp when you consider I was just looking up the Nokia N95 because nostalgia, and that had 8Gb of memory and I thought that was a lot back in 2009).

I could have had a Samsung A40 instead, but my luck with Samsungs is not great (both of the ones I've owned previously I've had to take in for repairs. Although, I guess, third time's the charm?)

I've got it mostly set up now - I've just got to put the SIM card in, and we are go!
I am almost at the end of Kingdoms of Amalur! (I think? Time estimates vary wildly, but there's a consensus that the main plot is between thirty and forty hours. I'm about twenty five in, I think, and I didn't do a ton of side quests).

I'm enjoying it a lot more than I expected to, even if it reminds me a lot of different games I've played already. Which feels a bit like when I watch a TV program or read a book and am like, "this is like this other thing!" which sometimes I wish I didn't do that?

So mostly it's like Dragon Age II and Fable smushed together. Though there are some bits that are like DA:I (prismere is red lyrium, right? Especially when ExpandMASSIVE SPOILER! ). I know this is the second game where I've said this but also this is more obvious than the nethicite AND both KoA and DAII were released by EA).

I've seen a lot of people compare it to Skyrim, but it doesn't feel like that to me (I think it depends on what you've played? But praying at the roadside shrines does feel like Oblivion to me, primarily because that element doesn't really exist in Skyrim*).

I do wish, however, that it didn't adhere to the "All Celtic myths/sources are the same thing!" though. It's nice to not have a smush of Irish/Scots, and the majority of the inspo is Irish and it sticks to it (and all the fae have Irish accents, because otherwise how would we know they're fae, right?) But then there are characters (either fae or elves, but I think mostly fae) whose names are blatantly Welsh inspired, but it's like the writers/creators/whoever didn't care enough to put any effort into how the names sound (looking at you, Owaiglyn! ESPECIALLY you).

(My nitpicking reminded me of this post about writers using Irish as Discount Elvish by Orla nĂ DhĂșill which admittedly I haven't read till just now, but it's the same feeling of They Just Didn't Care Enough).

I mean, goddamnit, if you're going to do something like this, pick a mythology and fucking stick to it! AND DO YOUR SODDING RESEARCH. Wales is not Ireland and neither of those places are Scotland, even though there are some similarities in language/myths if you look hard enough/in the right places.

(Oh yeah, and? The game's lore saying the Travellers are the most renowned thieves in the land? NOT A GOOD LOOK, MY MAN).

As angry as I sound about this, I am enjoying the game in general. The plot is interesting and coherent (unlike Skyrim. No, I will not take that back). I am interested to see how it ends (I sort of know spoilers, but not exact enough ones to know exactly what's coming).

(and I'm not really mad mad, just highly irritated).

The soundtrack is awesome (and also very Fable-esque, which is not a bad thing in the slightest).

So yeah, I'm glad I eventually came around to this and picked it up!

*I know there's the stones that grant bonuses, but that's not the same thing.
Today I am 32.

I realise that, in internet terms, I am practically prehistoric, but I don't care. I'm still waiting to feel like A Grown-Up.

Hasn't happened yet.

I have had a good day, although in most ways it's been a typical Saturday, except with birthday cards, money, and a crying nephew.

Last night, since I was staying up till stupid o'clock, as it was the weekend, I decided to play the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning demo. Mainly because I wanted the items it unlocks in ME3 (since both games were released by EA), but also because I'd been reading about it, and it sounded like there were things I would like about it. Fae! Magic! Item crafting! An epic RPG!

Um, no. Well, I mean, it does have those things but. It gave me a headache. I did not like the style of the characters, and it just didn't grab me. It also reminded me a lot of that one Baldur's Gate game I played* (and also had what I think of as a "typical" Western RPG style, which I can't explain, but I know it when I see it), and that didn't win me over. It also felt to me like it wanted to be a JRPG and was failing really badly.

It was also completely not what I was expecting. I was expecting like a crusades/Middle Eastern flavoured game and that did not happen (although it gives me more fuel to work on an idea I have that's set in the Middle East).

THAT SAID.

I like some of the music (I heard some of it first on Howard Goodall's radio show on Classic FM, and that sounded Middle Eastern, so you can see where the idea came from originally). I like that even if you play a female character, the armour is not (that) stupid - it still has a breastplate with clear divisions for either breast (you know, lest we forget what gender our character is, even though women look womanly, and men look manly - I didn't like the lack of choice in the character creator. Sometimes it annoys me how long it takes to fine-tune a character in Bioware games, but I miss that, too. I like being able to make a masculine looking woman, or a feminine looking man).

I liked that time passed, from day to night, and back. For once it didn't give me Majora's Mask flashbacks, which is always a good thing (maybe, after seven years, I'm finally getting over that??)

I also liked smashing boxes and vases. And they regenerate when a new day starts! I would not actually be surprised if that's an actual way of generating money in the full game (since you will, more often than not, get a handful of coins when the boxes break).

Oh, and there was an animal design I liked! There are oxen in the main town, and they make me think of Final Fantasy Tactics era Ifrit. I also discovered that you can kill town animals for XP, but that disturbed me (and only occurred by accident).

Hmm. That was more than I thought I had to say about it, but there we go. Words. Have them!

*Dark Alliance. I found it slow, boring, repetitive, and patronising (the female PC can't carry as much as the man (weight restrictions) - I do believe she may be weaker, too; also, to date, my only acquaintance with jiggle physics *vomits*).
