OK so actually I really like Pacific Rim, and I didn't really know I did?
(I didn't like it for the reasons I'm "supposed" to - apparently it's a big hit with millennials (of which I am only just one - I'm somewhere between that and Gen X depending on who you ask), and that's down to the fact that the main villains of the piece aren't human, and the problem isn't something we created. Apparently. It's not why I like it. I like the colours and ho shit huge robots hitting stuff and a bond of friendship that's deeper than words and a father/daughter relationship that is really rather lovely. Also that really freaking scary bit right around the middle of the film).
I gave it another go yesterday. On my own, no interruptions. And you know what? I liked it a lot better. I found myself thinking, "oh yes, this bit!" and the jaeger/kaiju fights didn't seem as long and protracted as they did the first time I watched it (a bit like a return journey, I suppose).
There things I don't like, still, like Ron Perlman's character (I don't think he's meant to be likeable, but whatever). I don't like Geisler, principally because the actor's voice gets on my nerves - I find parts of his speech quite whiny and high-pitched and IDK if that's how the guy speaks in real life but oh jeez my ears. But as I've mentioned many a time before, I'm really picky about voices. I'm still not keen on the kaiju but, as I said before, it's really not my thing anyway (and I mean, unlike when I say I don't like mecha because actually I do).
Things I do like, however, include the fact I like Raleigh. Give me a minute here, because I came away from the first watch thinking he was a bit bland and lackluster. But after a second watch, I'm like shit, actually, this character's good.

And you know what else I like about him? In spite of everything, he's pretty damn cheerful. Not to the point of obnoxiousness, which is good, but he doesn't let stuff get him down or hold him back. And I really like that. I mean, I like angsty characters (I do. I really do) but they're not the be all and end all and there seem to be too many of them around (I'd say maybe I should stop reading books for teenagers, but they're not just in the teenage books).
