wieso siehst du so traurig aus?

My mental and physical health have taken a nosedive recently, so THAT'S FUN. Usually I can handle when it's one or the other, but both of them decided to tag team me, wheeeeee!

I'm not going to go into more detail than that for the moment, as I have some plate spinning that I need to deal with first, but I am going to go to the doctor about both things, so I am working on getting it sorted.

In other news, have a meme!

[personal profile] lassarina did a meme whereby someone had chosen three interests off her profile page for her to talk about, and anyone else was welcome to comment and let her pick three interests off their page, for them to talk about. So I did. And if anyone wants me to pick three for them, let me know in the comments!

Rina picked: Digital Devil Saga; Yume Nikki; Ancient Egypt

Digital Devil Saga

Ahhh, Megaten.

I like DDS for much the same reasons as I like The Matrix - and I will stop there, because SPOILERS. But also I like the aesthetics, and the use of Hindu mythology throughout at least the first game, and it is from whence my username comes! (At least on here, although I'm thinking of changing it). Muladhara is the base where the Embryon (the player characters) hang out, and most of the other bases/dungeons are named for the chakras, going up the body as you progress in game.

I also like it because it's a flipping Megaten. While you don't collect demons in this one (the only demons you summon are your alternate forms), it still has all the usual suspects for you to fight. And includes Hitoshura from SMT III as a rock hard bonus boss in DDS2. Because why not!

I really want to replay it because it's been about ten years or so since I last did, and I want to know if I'll still like it as much (it was my favourite SMT at one point). Also I never beat DDS2, so it would be nice to do that.

Yume Nikki

I discovered Yume Nikki by accident. I think I was reading an Encyclopaedia Drammatica page, where it mentioned shut-ins playing it (because Madotsuki is a shut-in herself) and I looked it up, and lo and behold! It was a free video game, specifically about dreams, although it also covers depression and suicide (nothing graphic but, you know, be wary if you find that upsetting).

I love shit about dreams, so I was all over this.

While it is a walking simulator, essentially, I just love how odd everything is, and the different effects that you can pick up that change Madotsuki's appearance (Kikiyama, the person who made it, made sprite sheets for every single effect, and there are 24 of them, so that was a lot of work on just that alone). Even though the version I played wasn't complete, there's just SO MUCH stuff in there that you could spend days just searching for things, which I probably did, back in 2009.

Ancient Egypt

I am sad that I do not have my icon of Daniel Jackson available for this post :(

Okay, so both my parents were history nerds. My mum studied Classics at university (Roman and Greek stuff, as far as I understand it), and my dad was big into archaeology, and had a strong interest in Roman history. I don't precisely remember how I got into Ancient Egypt, though I do remember reading one of my mum's mythology books A LOT as a young 'in, and liking the Egyptian section the best. I liked that the gods had animal heads (or, in some cases, were just represented as animals) because as far as I knew at the time, most gods were human shaped. And then, I've always just been interested in it since.

I did try to learn hieroglyphs, but never managed to memorise more than a handful of them. I considered going to university to do studies in Egyptology but, at the time, most of the courses were based in London, as they had the best resources, and I didn't fancy moving all that way from home.

I also will admit to being fully suckered into the "aliens built the pyramids!" thing as a teenager, but since I was also neck deep in Grey alien conspiracy theory at the time, that somewhat explains but does not excuse that. I now know differently, and have done for over twenty years, and recognise that shit like that is actually highly racist.

I don't know if I have a favourite god. I just think they're all kind of neat.

I hope those were adequate explanations; if anyone wants more details/clarifications, feel free to ask!

Ack! :(

Hope things get less-hard soon!
