"that was spesticular!"

I have woken up with a literal pain in my neck, so that's fun. I think I either tensed my left shoulder too hard yesterday, or slept on it funny, or some combination of both. I've taken some painkillers, and hopefully it will ease.

Anyway, in more exciting news, I beat Nocturne yesterday! I fully did not expect to, and it only took me two goes (as opposed to more for the previous boss) which was a nice surprise! I don't know where my ending ranked on a scale of good to bad, but I got the one where everything goes back to how it had been, and I am pleased with that! I wasn't keeping track of markers at all, but I think I must have racked up the most points with Yuko? *shrugs*

I didn't do much of the kalpas, as I get fed up with the bullshit in there (think teleport floors but magnified; also invisible walls because why not, I guess). So no True Demon Ending for me. I'm saving that for the next time.

And then I started on NEO: The World Ends With You! I will put everything about it under spoiler cuts, because obviously it's a very new game. My initial feeling is that I have very mixed feelings, but I'll explain more under the cut. I do like it being 3D, though, and I still love the art (which has had a glow up, and there's a nice little reference to it at one point)!

Not sure how I feel about Rindo (the MC) right now, but I like his friend, Fret. I think Swallow is Shoko; she's on the cover for a reason, and she's the only other person Rindo can contact apart from Fret. It's her or the other girl off the cover, but I think Shoko, because she seems to poke her nose into their business waaaaay more than a Reaper ought to.

I like the way battle works, although I think my arthritic hands will suffer for it the same way they did playing Lightning Returns. I guess we'll find out! I didn't figure out how they'd translate it to non-touch controls, but it absolutely works! (Tap the screen is now tap a button or trigger; press the screen is hold a button or trigger - those are the only two I've seen so far).

I also like that the game asks you if you want to evolve a pin or not! I knew it warned you going in, but I didn't know it asked you what you wanted to do. THAT'S SO NEAT.

And I love that the voice acting is still the same (i.e. mostly "grunts" or singular words during conversation, but you do get fully voiced animated cutscenes).

What I don't love is how like bad fanfic it feels. Minamimoto shows up to help you because whoops there's Taboo Noise all over the place? OKAY THEN. This dude, who was a major antagonist in the previous game?? EHHHHH. I hope there's a good reason for it.

(Side note: I have the JP voice track on, and I hate to say it, because Minamimoto annoys me, but I already miss his EN VA).

And who's this dude in charge? And why do Reapers feel like it's fine to poke their noses in everyone's business? And what is this about teams, and ranking, and shit?

I get that some of this is because I don't know what's going on. I also get that it's because this Shibuya is an "Inversion" (whatever that means). I don't know if I'm supposed to know that or not, but I found it out in reading up about the extra scenario in the Switch version of the original game*. Because the extra scenario doesn't actually make that much sense otherwise. (I watched a video of the cutscenes from it, so it's possible I'm missing something?)

*shrugs*

I suppose it will - hopefully - make more sense once I get into it a bit more but right now, I am kind of side-eyeing it hard. But I love the original game SO MUCH. I don't think it needed a sequel, especially not this long after the original. It's going to have to do some work to win me over completely.

*Which. Oh god. I want to stab it in the eyeballs, it's horrible. I hate Coco, and I hate everything about her. She feels very much like a bad self-insert and she talks like she learnt to read off message boards or something. I don't mind her aesthetic, although even that is a bit overboard, but there's probably Some Reason for it that I don't know about yet.

I think I've said everything I want to say about that, for now.

In other other news: Johnny Chiodini streamed Untitled Goose Game on their channel yesterday afternoon, and it was delightful! (I didn't watch the whole thing because streams past two hours are a bit much for me, but I might go back to the rest of it later today).
