So, um, I, uh, have a PS4 now????

I got it free with my phone, which is mind-boggling and hilarious given that when we came into this year, my most recent Playstation was a PS2!

At the risk of repeating my question from February, any recs?

I have a list of games I want but can't afford, and three I own, handily behind this cut.

Own:

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
Final Fantasy Type-0 HD
Mass Effect: Andromeda*

Want:

The Last Guardian
Shadow of the Colossus
Persona 5
Wipeout Omega Collection
Final Fantasy XV
The Last Remnant remake
Agents of Mayhem
Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon Every Buddy
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles remake
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
Nier Automata
Horizon Zero Dawn
KH everything + III
Spyro Reignited
Crash Bandicoot remake**
Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor (I blame Outside Xbox for this one. I never really wanted to play a LotR game before this)
No Man's Sky
The Outer Worlds (turns out this is a first person game, and I can't play those :( )
all the Persona rhythm games
Pillars of Eternity (I blame Critical Role for this one)
Stellaris
Subnautica
Thimbleweed Park
Undertale
World of Final Fantasy
Yakuza 0 (and all the others)
some of the Ys games
eta: Untitled Goose Game
Spiderman
Stardew Valley[/eta]

Possible:

Elder Scrolls Online, except I don't play MMOs and can't afford a PS Plus subscription
Final Fantasy XIV for the exact same reason
Final Fantasy VII remake

I also thought about getting DA:I so I could have the prettier graphics and actually get completion on the story (since the 360/PS3 versions didn't get all the DLC because EA and/or Bioware are dicks).

I also also thought about getting one/some of the D&D games that are available because there seem to be quite a few now? I knew about the Baldur's Gate ones but I saw one that's a sequel to Planescape and there's Icewind Dale + something else as well? (And Neverwinter Nights, ofc. I remember a lot of people being BIG into that back in the day, so I want to know what the fuss was about!) (I blame Critical Role for this also)

So that's a bigger list than I expected! But if you have any additions or comments on what I've listed, please comment! (Heads up: I like Survival Horror in principle, but I absolutely will not play it. Which is why I'm avoiding the RE2 remake like the plague, for instance, and will not touch RE7 ever).

~

I don't know if I had anything else to say, but if I did, it has fallen out of my head in all the excitement.

~

*I know, I know, I know, but maybe I'll end up liking it? *shrug emoji*

**Crash Bandicoot was my BFF's favourite game when we were teenagers and yet somehow I never managed to play it, so making up for lost time, I guess!

Enjoy your PS4! It's a great console.

I'm glad to see Final Fantasy XV on your list! It's a fun, disastrously paced, heartfelt mess of a game; I love it intensely, and I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts if you do pick it up. I think the base edition can be found new for under a tenner, too.

I don't know if you have any interest in Spider-Man (he's the only superhero I have time for), but Spider-Man for PS4 (made by Insomniac, the studio behind Spyro) is excellent.

I also don't know if you have any experience with the 'walking around, talking to people and making choices to decide the flow of the story' genre of game, which I didn't really see until the PS3 era. If you're curious about it and you want to check it out to decide whether it's your thing, the first episode of Life Is Strange is free on the PlayStation Store.

I don't know how much cash you have, but I used to rent ps4 games through Boomerang rentals and found it reasonably cost-effective for working through older titles that didn't have a huge waiting list. Costs between £3.99 and £9.99 a month depending on what you want from the service, I think the more expensive option just gives you priority rental on newer titles and the cheapest one might limit how many you can rent a month?

Anyway now that I'm done shilling, Nier Automata is a great choice! Definitely recommend that.

You'd probably like Divinity Original Sin 2 if you've not played that!! Especially because you mentioned the D&D inspired games, it's another extremely excellent CPRG and just SO dense with quests and things to explore. The maps are huge, the writing is pretty solid and the combat is really fun when you play around with it because of how so many attacks interact with each other and the environment. I think I have something like 120 hours in it and that's just one campaign with one group of characters, so I could still go back to it if I wanted to. I see the console version around for around twenty quid.

Ooo, congrats! I love my PS4.

Hmm, the first game I played on it was Stardew Valley, which I enjoyed quite a bit. It's charming, and I liked it over Animal Crossing on the Nintendo DS, because unlike Animal Crossing, your farm doesn't deteriorate if you don't log in for several days: instead, you pick up where you left off.

Your list of wanted games includes all the other games I have for my PS4, so I don't have any other recommendations. I did want to point out that for Final Fantasy XIV, at least, a PlayStation Plus subscription isn't required. I play XIV on my PS4 and don't have a PS+ subscription. I wouldn't be surprised if this is true for the other MMOs as well.

Definitely hyping FFXIV, which requires its own subscription fee but not PS+.

(I'm so sorry I dropped the ball on getting back to you about FFXII. It's been a Time.)

Yeah, it has a subscription fee per month and new expansions come out every two years, so every couple years there's a new "game" that's about $40 which gives another ~40-60 hours of new story content plus whatever leveling etc. you do, and the monthly fee is in two tiers which I think are $12 and $15 US? $12 gets you one character per server, $15 is multiple characters per server. One character can try out as many job classes as you like, so there's no limitations there. All other real-money things are either completely cosmetic (clothing, mounts) or extreme convenience ("skipping" to level 70 on extra classes; it's very easy to keep up with the story level-wise on your main class) and thus entirely optional. I actually really like the monetary structure for XIV; it's very reasonable.

XD yeah it's definitely one of my indulgences, but I enjoy it very much and have a good group of friends I play with that makes it very fun. ALso I find the community pretty solid; there are a few toxic elitists, but in general the playerbase ranges from "inoffensive" to "pleasant" to "hey can I talk to you more", so I'm happy with that.
