everything changes but you

Book meme, stolen from [personal profile] lassarina:

1. What book have you been unable to finish?

At the moment, nothing. I haven't read a book in a while. But I was stuck on The Drawing Of The Three for over a year. That was certainly a thing.

Actually, I suppose this is a lie, as I started Enigma six weeks ago and haven't managed to finish it yet. So maybe that.

2. Which book haven't you read yet because you haven't had the time?

Hmm. It's not that I don't have the time, because I certainly do, more that I feel that I don't want to read or that I ought to be spending my time doing "worthy" things. By which I mean boring things like cleaning the house, but then I end up rolling around staring at the ceiling instead.

3. Which book haven't you read yet because it's a sequel?

The Waste Lands by Stephen King. Partly because it took me so long to get through the previous book in the series (as mentioned above), and partly because OH GOD WHAT IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. Also I don't have a copy of book four (Wizard and Glass, I think?) so I'm kind of screwed if I want to carry on with the next one STRAIGHT AWAY.

Also the other two Greg Bear Halo books (Silentium and Primordium). I liked the first one, but I can't bring myself to start on the others.

4. Which book haven't you read yet because it's brand new?

Brand new to me, or brand new in general? Because I don't really have new books as in bought in the year they're published. But as in new to me, I can't remember the last book I bought that wasn't one I had read before, or looked at immediately. (I mean, I know the last book I bought; it was sci-fi art, and I've already looked through it).

5. Which book haven't you read yet because you read a book by the same author and didn’t enjoy it?

Hum. Well. I have the Wolves of Mercy Falls books (except for the fourth one) by Maggie Stiefvater and, while I didn't like the first one, I found the middle two kind of readable on flicking through them. But, I didn't like Shiver (it put me off her books for a LOOOOONG time), and I am still not amused with how she finished off The Raven Cycle.

And Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, because I did not like Eleanor and Park AT ALL. I'm thinking of taking it off the to read list, but I'd like to see how accurate her depiction of a fangirl is.

6. Which book haven't you read yet because you’re just not in the mood for it?

Probably Cloud Atlas. It keeps staring at me, and I keep wanting to selectively read bits and there are bits that intrigue me but. I don't know that I will like the way the book's split (pretentious formatting irritates me), nor that I will even get on with the eventual story.

Also Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch. I like urban fantasy (*waves at John Constantine*) but IDK, I'm just...not in the mood to start that book right now.

7. Which book haven't you read yet because it’s humongous?

I can't remember if there are any humongous ones on my pile to be read. I tend to avoid doorstoppers because OH GOD THE SIZE. That said, possibly Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey. I keep looking at it, picking it up, going, "Wow, that's heavy," and putting it back down.

8. Which book haven't you read yet because because it was a cover buy that turned out to have poor reviews?

Generally, I live for bad reviews. One of my fave things for the past couple(?) of years has been looking books up on Goodreads and reading the bad reviews. I'm not really bothered if people dissed the book - it's more likely to make me want to read it, if I'm honest (even if the results do make me want to claw my eyes out).

9. What is the most intimidating book in your TBR pile?

*shrugs* *looks at Goodreads to read list because physical pile is providing no answers*

Possibly the Bowie biogs (because OH MAN), although maybe also Brian Eno's autobiography because I don't really want to know that much about him? I only want to read the bits about making Outside (it being my favourite Bowie album).

10. Who do you tag? I tag no-one! Go forth and do the meme if you want to.

~

While I am on the subject of books, and urban fantasy in particular, can we stop having books with awesome premises that turn out to be paranormal romances specifically where the main couple are destined to be together, forever. Or that turn out to be paranormal romances full stop?

Please?
