For some reason, I decided it would be pertinent to spend most of the weekend watching a Resident Evil 2 longplay. As you do.
The first one I found was Claire A/Leon B, which is the canon order (as of Darkside Chronicles), but which feels backwards to me because when I played through it with my BFF, we did Leon A/Claire B (and didn't finish the whole game for whatever reason), and that's what feels "right" to me. So now I am watching a different one that's doing it that way. That makes it a lot more clearer to me now that there are not as many changes between the versions as I thought, but enough that it obviously became a thing that I like in fiction.
(I was pleased to learn (or relearn, since I probably knew at some point) that the canon version of events in RE1 is Jill's, because that's the one me and my BFF did. Although, again, we didn't finish it because of whatever reasons. I mean, we did get as far as the final boss, but we never beat him).
(We totally nailed RE3, though :D )
So that's what I'm doing now. Of course, I also thought about streaming the other games, since I'm really not going to play them myself, but omfg there are so many now! Although I'm not really getting the chance to play anything besides Animal Crossing on my phone/2DS, sooooo...it will give me something else as an option to have on when I'm doing Stuff™

In other news, I requested All The Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater from the library, and started reading it today. I am not very far in (page 8!), but I don't know if I will finish it. I think I'm a bit jaded by stuff I'd read a while back about it (I have read some good stuff, but obvs the bad stuff is what sticks in your brain).
I suppose we will just have to see!

Concluding what’s canon in Resident Evil is more of a broad strokes kinda thing opposed to a methodical science. Even the way events are depicted in reimaginings (Hullo, Darkside Chronicles) change up things which are still within established series canon. Like Marvin Branagh, who appears in 2 and some side stuff, but doesn’t get screen time in Darkside. (Or the less than optimal way they completely reinvisioned Alexia. Yesh)
I wouldn’t say Jill’s events in RE1 are the definitive canon. If that was the case then Rebecca would’ve died, and Wesker wouldn’t have had such a hate-on for Chris, in particular. Code: Veronica has dialogue between Wesker and Chris which insinuates they confronted one another at the Spencer Estate, but that only happens in Chris’ story. I think we’re supposed to assume both stories happened, somehow, concurrently.

Oh sure, I'm only going off what I've read.
IMO, Marvin isn't that integral to the plot (even though it is him that tells Claire about Chris in her A scenario), so honestly his not getting much use in DC isn't really a surprise to me. I get what you're saying about Alexia's characterisation - you'd think Capcom would've at least tried to be consistent (though that they weren't isn't really a surprise, either).
I've always taken it as both stories happening concurrently with RE1, but my bias lies with Jill, I have to admit. Again, it was just going off what I'd read, which may have been what someone on the dev team for one of the game said, but didn't really stop to think about what they were saying.
