I started playing Lightning Returns yesterday. I did not think I would like it.
In general, I don't like things where there's a time scale to be adhered to, because it makes me panic. I hate timed parts in games, even when the time allowed is a ridiculous amount, and you'd only run out if you were really unlucky. I especially hate them when they are the entire gameplay mechanic. I still panic thinking about playing Majora's Mask because, although I think I'd be better at time management these days, jeez 72 minutes real time is WAY not enough.
(it's also a really freaking creepy game, aside from the time stuff).
All that aside, I like Lightning Returns! The time scale is actually not bugging me (apart from when there's areas I can't access at certain times of day). What is bugging me is that level-ups don't come from fighting, they come from finishing quests which...if you can't complete them for whatever reason, bang goes your level up.
Also, I'm sort of following the theory that the game wants you to fail the first time around. Because then you've got some knowledge about the game world, and you can beat the shit out whatever that you found difficult before, because now you've got a few more levels under your belt than you did the first time around. I don't know if that's how you're "supposed" to do it, but really I don't care.
I'm sort of sad you can only have six active schemata available to choose from at any one time, but I'm sure I'll eventually figure out which ones are better and so on. And maybe stop spending my money on potions, so I can buy some more clothes!
(I hate that a lot of the currently available ones verge on the stripperific, however. Even the ones with decent armour, like the Saviour outfit, still have Lightning in a thong or whatever. But I am not the prime target for this game*. Which doesn't make it right, of course).
Oh, and, I found a busker in the Commercial District (I think? Near the South Station) in Luxerion who badly sings the song that plays in New Bodhum in XIII-2. The first time I heard it, I was all, "I know that song. Why do I know that song. OHHHHHHHH."
Oh also: there is an Inquisitor (actually, I think there's several), and now I want the most obvious crossover.
Finally: I like Lumnia, I think she's hilarious. I also like Chocolina (and have since FFXIII-2). Do I get a prize for liking the two most irritating characters in the game?? ;)
*That said, dang I saw this pic of Snow the other night and practically fell out of my chair because DANG, SON. I've always had a crush on him, but dang. Also a massive improvement on his XIII-2 design, but let's be honest, anything would be better than that.

I don't know if we're outright expected to fail our first times, but I definitely hit a brick fucking wall and ended up failing intentionally so I could start an NG+. Things flowed much better after that.
I actually liked the "quests and sidequests are how you level up" mechanic well enough. Some sidequests were better than others, though, and I'd never have the patience to get them all.
I really loved having Lightning kill things in tuxedos and ballroom dresses and Cloud's outfit, but yeah, a lot of the outfits are terrible. Wait 'til you see Warrior! (If you haven't already.)

Eh, I don't either, but I was reading the TVT page for it, and one of the comments said this was a possible idea, so I thought why not try it. I think it's kind of cool that it works that way, rather than how games normally work.
Yeah, I do too, actually! I hate grinding via battles. The only problem I have right now is remembering to do the quests so that I can get the level ups, because I thought if I took on too many sidequests, I'd run out of time (which, the opposite is true, had I but thought about it!)
YES! I want to get her the bouncer's outfit, but I never seem to have the cash when I'm at that shop :( - currently she's either running around in the Matador outfit, or the dress she has for the show in Yusnaan. I have not seen the Warrior outfit, but I can believe it's awful *sighs*
(My mum thought you could put the outfits together yourself, and I told her if that were the case, Lightning would be showing waaaaay less skin. It also made me sad that you can't actually do that).
