Hey, if it makes you feel better, when I was first learning, I wrote myself a post-it to remind which was which and which came next and it is still stuck to the wall where I can see it to remind me.
I found it really quick to work up, which was a bonus, but I find holding bigger needles quite awkward (I have problems gripping because I'm hypermobile). That said, it's totally doable! 5mm needles are about average for chunky yarn (so should be fine for the pattern you're using) and honestly, I bought the 10mm needles for quick fake lace knitting (which I actually haven't done because I'm a loser and I keep getting distracted by other things, heh).
